AI Search Is Killing Old School Marketing Funnels, and Here’s What’s Replacing Them

Most marketing teams are still measuring a search experience that barely exists anymore. Sixty eight percent of Google searches now end without a single click, up from roughly half just two years ago. The funnel doesn’t lose that visitor. It never gets one.

I recently spoke with News Junction about what happens to marketing strategy when search stops sending traffic and starts handing out answers instead.

Here’s the story most reporting misses. AI systems now assemble a single answer from multiple sources and serve it before a user ever scrolls to a traditional result. The brand behind that answer gets cited. It just never gets the click. Queries that used to generate ten blue links now generate one paragraph, and that shift is accelerating, not leveling off. The traditional funnel was built around a version of search that, as of this year, describes barely a third of Google queries. Everything downstream of that assumption starts to wobble.

I’ve always believed speed without clarity is chaos, and clarity without speed is just a nice idea that never happens. This is that principle playing out in real time. Content built to maximize time on page, stuffed with keywords and padding to keep a human scrolling past ads, is exactly what an AI system skips. The brands earning citations are the ones stating one clear claim and backing it with a specific example. Everything else is noise a system can’t verify. It’s the same shift I got into in Gen Z Killed the Search Bar, just showing up in a different generation of search behavior.

The part that should worry agencies more than their clients: plenty of them are still selling funnel metrics built for a search landscape that no longer represents most queries. That reporting model is going to look as disconnected as a factory measuring success by units shipped in a market that stopped caring about volume. I’ve written before about how most agencies solve the wrong problem for their clients, and this is the sharpest version of that yet.

At Pabs Marketing, we’ve built that discipline directly into how we run conversion work now, treating a citation with the same weight we used to give a click. The clients still pour their entire budget into landing pages and retargeting are optimizing for a search experience two out of three users never complete.

The brands that adjust now won’t have a clean attribution story. They’ll have real influence, which was always the point.
