Most brands still believe loyalty is earned through great storytelling, beautiful photography, and a homepage that feels right. That belief is about to get expensive. A growing share of buyers will never see any of it, because the thing making the purchase decision is software, and software cannot be charmed.
I recently spoke with Digital Scoop about how AI shopping agents are changing what brand loyalty actually means, and why most marketing teams are preparing for the wrong customer.
The number that stopped me was this one. According to Checkout.com research cited in the piece, 57 percent of consumers would let an AI agent switch them to a different brand if it found better value. Think about what that means for every loyalty program and repeat-purchase discount built over the last decade. The preference you paid for can be overridden by a calculation in a fraction of a second.
The core issue, as I see it, is that brands are still marketing to the shopper of five years ago. An agent does not scroll, compare open tabs, or react to a hero banner. It reads structured product data and weighs price, shipping time, and return terms. I wrote recently about how AI search is killing funnels, and agentic checkout is the next step in that same shift.
That is why the first thing we tell clients at Pabs Marketing is that this is a marketing job, not an IT job. In practice, it means auditing product feeds the way a team once audited a homepage. Return windows, shipping estimates, and stock levels need to be accurate down to the hour, because an agent that catches a single wrong data point will simply pick a competitor’s listing.
The insight I keep coming back to is that none of this removes the need for human thinking. AI won’t replace good judgment; it will amplify it. An agent can execute a pricing or catalog decision instantly, but someone still has to decide which data points matter and why. It is the same reason there is one decision I refuse to hand over to AI in my own companies.
The brands adapting fastest are not the ones racing to plug into every new checkout protocol. They are the ones treating agent readiness as an extension of disciplined execution: accurate data, consistent follow-through, and a clear read on what actually earns the sale.

Loyalty used to live in the story you told, and now it lives in the data you keep accurate.
