Most founders treat growth as the goal. I’ve never seen that end well.

Speed is seductive. A full pipeline feels like winning. But the businesses I’ve watched collapse weren’t the slow ones — they were the ones that moved fast before the foundation could hold them.

Early in the growth of my software development firm, I had more client applications than I could responsibly take on. The money was there. The demand was real. And I still said no. Handing those relationships off to people who hadn’t been part of the original work would have broken the chain of understanding that made our delivery worth hiring in the first place. So I held the line, focused on the clients already in the room, and waited for the right moment to scale. That decision protected something no revenue number can buy back: reputation.

As a Division I golfer, I learned that the smallest structural errors compound over 18 holes in ways that completely alter a scorecard. You can’t fix a compromised setup mid-round. You carry those errors forward. Business works the same way. A process barely holding at ten clients collapses at a hundred. Consistency beats intensity — it’s not about one great shot, it’s about building something that earns the right to carry more weight.
